Ammonia Production Trends in 2020

Over the past 5 years, ammonia output in Russia has grown by more than 20%.

Growing demand for nitrogen fertilisers is driving ammonia production. At the same time, a significant share is exported — around a quarter of total output — although the main focus remains the domestic market.

In 2020, almost 20 million tonnes were produced, 8% higher than the previous year’s figure.

Production breakdown by federal district.

• The leader in ammonia production is the Volga Federal District — 42% of total output. Production in the region grew by 3%. The regional leader is Uralchem. At the KuibyshevAzot plant, a project to expand ammonia production has been underway since 2018. By 2022, output is planned to increase by 0.5 million tonnes. Also, one of the main production companies in Tatarstan, Ammoniy, resolved its bankruptcy issues this year. Another major regional project is being carried out by Metafrax, which has been building a plant to produce urea and ammonia since 2018 — expected completion in 2021.
• The Northwestern Federal District — around 25%. Production in the region grew by 23% in 2020. This significant increase was driven by the opening of a new plant by EuroChem in 2019. Also in the region, Akron is carrying out planned modernisation of its production facilities.
• The Central Federal District — 20%. Production growth in the region was around 7%. A new plant is being built in the Tula region for ammonia and urea production, with expected completion in 2022.
• The North Caucasian Federal District — 7%, more than 1.36 million tonnes. This figure is unchanged from last year.
• The Siberian Federal District — 6%. Production in the district fell by 3% compared to last year’s volumes.
