Caustic Soda and Soda Ash Market Analysis 2020

Caustic Soda.

In the first 9 months of this year, around 0.95 million tonnes of caustic soda were produced. This is 1.4% less than in the same period last year.

Since 2015, total caustic production in Russia has shown modest growth — 1% in 2019 and 3% in 2018.

The vast majority of Russian caustic soda production is located in the Volga Federal District — overall production in the district decreased by 1.2% (compared to the same period last year).

The production leader is Bashkir Soda Company — around 225 thousand tonnes per year.

The decline in production volumes is due to depletion of deposits. However, “BSC” General Director Eduard Davydov reports sufficient raw material reserves through to 2027.

A similar trend is observed in the soda ash market — over the first 3 quarters of 2020, total production fell by 2% (compared to the previous period).

The production leader is Bashkir Soda Company — 2.4 million tonnes per year.

The decline in production volumes is caused by depletion of deposits and the designation of Mount Kushtau (the Shakhtau quarry), one of the main raw material sources, as a Natural Monument. However, “BSC” General Director Eduard Davydov reports sufficient raw material reserves through to 2027.
