Historical background:

The Polevskoy Cryolite Plant is located in Russia, in the Sverdlovsk region. Officially founded in 1907. Since 1933, the plant’s main specialisation has been the production of fluorine compounds.

Today the plant is part of the RUSAL corporation.

Produces (or used to produce) the following products:

• Aluminium trifluoride, approximately 45,000 tonnes/year,
• Cryolite, approximately 69,300 tonnes/year,
• Sodium fluoride, approximately 10,000 tonnes/year,
• Hydrofluoric acid, approximately 3,600 tonnes/year

Initially RUSAL planned to modernise the plant (2008) and implement a full-scale programme to significantly increase the environmental friendliness of production processes, carry out a major overhaul of the property, and significantly modernise the production technology.

After the fall in world prices for aluminium fluoride (fluoroaluminate) in October 2013, the plant was mothballed.
