Scientists Discover Solid Compounds of Hydrogen Peroxide

Chemists have discovered a new way to obtain compounds from Hydrogen Peroxide.

This could potentially yield solid substances such as pharmaceuticals with a simultaneous antiseptic effect.

The discovery was made by an international team of scientists from an Israeli university and several Russian institutes.

The work was published in the international chemistry journal Molecules. The research focused on studying the crystalline structure of peroxide compounds.

The first such compounds were obtained more than a century ago, but science has yet to find an alternative to them. Urea peroxide and sodium percarbonate are still used today. At the turn of the century (in 2000), science knew of only about 40 solid peroxide compounds. By 2020, this number had exceeded 100 known compounds, with roughly a third of them synthesised and studied by Russian scientists.

Peroxide compounds remain insufficiently studied today, so the published article with the results of the research is an important step forward.
In addition, hydrogen peroxide is a safe and highly effective oxidising component used not only in medicine but across a very wide range of industries. The prospects for such materials are therefore extremely high, above all in pharmaceuticals. A dual effect is expected — a disinfecting action combined with direct delivery of other medications into the body.
