Phosphoric acid is used in metalworking, fertiliser production, the food industry, water treatment, cleaning formulations and process cleaning. The method of use depends on the concentration, equipment, surface material and process task. At a production facility, work with the acid follows a process card, with control of pH, consumption, contact time and safety requirements.
Phosphoric acid is diluted only according to an approved formulation or process regulation, taking into account the initial concentration and the required working solution. In production practice, the acid is added to water, not the other way round, to reduce the risk of overheating and splashing. After preparation, the solution is checked for density, pH or another control parameter, if required by the process.
After treatment, the surface is usually rinsed with water or neutralised according to the facility’s regulations, if required for the next stage. In metalworking, it’s important to take into account the material, the presence of a phosphate film, and requirements for subsequent painting, priming or assembly. Rinse water cannot simply be discharged without control — it must be collected and disposed of according to internal rules and environmental requirements.
The difference lies in concentration, intended use, purity requirements and documentation. 73% phosphoric acid is more often treated as a technical-grade product for industrial processes, while the 85% grade can be used in tasks requiring a higher concentration or food-grade quality. When purchasing, it’s important to check not just the percentage but the GOST standard, impurity mass fraction, packaging and application conditions.
