Salicilic acid

Salicylic acid acts as a powerful keratolytic, softening and exfoliating the keratinised layer of cells, which is why it is so valued in dermatology and cosmetics. Looking in more detail at how salicylic acid works at the physiological level, it suppresses the activity of cyclooxygenase and reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins, which explains its anti-inflammatory effect. Understanding what salicylic acid does in industrial processes, it is worth noting its antiseptic properties: it destroys the cell walls of microorganisms and prevents the development of mould. This is exactly how this substance works in food preservation and in the textile industry, where the stability of finished formulations is important.

The guaranteed shelf life of salicylic acid produced under GOST 624-70 is 12 months from the date of manufacture. However, this substance is chemically stable at room temperature and does not decompose, so under proper conditions it retains its properties significantly longer. To extend the shelf life of salicylic acid beyond the formal guaranteed period, it is enough to keep it in a dry, unheated warehouse in sealed packaging, avoiding moisture and direct sunlight. The white crystalline powder does not cake or lose activity when stored properly, and it can sublime when heated, so overheating is best avoided.

The choice between grades depends on the field of application and the purity requirements of the product. Grade A has a high degree of purification and strictly complies with sanitary and pharmaceutical standards, so it is purchased for the synthesis of pharmaceutical components, the manufacture of ointments, creams and other topical products. Grade B is aimed at technical needs: it is used in the chemical, textile, leather and rubber industries, where stability in the process is important but pharmaceutical purity is not required. In wholesale supplies, the price of grade B is usually lower, and consumption volumes for technical purposes are noticeably higher, so it is important for procurement staff to agree the specification and certificate of conformity for the specific batch with the supplier in advance.

Large wholesale buyers use this chemical reagent across a wide range of processes. In metallurgy it is used in the processing of copper ores and in the alloying of gold- and aluminium-based alloys, where precise dosing of the pure substance is important. Leather and textile production incorporates salicylic acid into tanning processes and dye fixation on fabrics for stable colouring. A separate segment of consumption is industrial wastewater treatment, where the reagent is introduced into the system to neutralise certain contaminants. Manufacturers of rubber goods and dyes value it as an intermediate substance in organic synthesis, and laboratories purchase it for the colorimetric analysis of iron and copper.

When storing large volumes, humidity control plays the primary role, because even slight moisture can cause the powder to clump. The warehouse should be dry and unheated, with good ventilation, and the packaging sealed to exclude contact with atmospheric moisture. Salicylic acid has no hazard classification and is transported by covered vehicles, but precautions are still necessary: personnel should avoid inhaling dust and work in gloves, since prolonged skin contact can cause irritation. Spills are collected into a separate container, and batches are placed on pallets with clear labelling to ensure traceability from receipt to write-off into production.
