Borax-10 hydrate technical is aqueous sodium tetraborate containing water of crystallisation. The designation “10-hydrate” indicates the form of the product, and the technical grade means the raw material is intended for production tasks and is assessed by physicochemical indicators. When purchasing, it is important to check compliance with GOST 8429-77, grade A or B, the mass fraction of Na₂B₄O₇·10H₂O, the content of carbonates, sulfates, heavy metals, arsenic and insoluble residue.
Grade A of technical borax differs by a higher content of the main substance and stricter limits on impurities. Grade B may have wider tolerances for carbonates, sulfates, heavy metals and water-insoluble residue. One grade should not be substituted for the other without agreement from the process engineer.
Technical borax dissolves in water to form an alkaline solution, but the dissolution rate depends on temperature, crystal size, stirring and concentration. Under production conditions, the product is introduced into water gradually, achieving complete dissolution and absence of sediment at the bottom of the container. If the solution is used in a process with controlled parameters, it is checked for clarity, pH, concentration and the absence of insoluble particles. For a stable result it is important to use clean containers and prevent contamination of the raw material during decanting.
Technical borax is stored in a dry, unheated warehouse, in sealed factory packaging and protected from moisture. If it gets wet, the product can clump, become contaminated and harder to dose when preparing solutions or dry mixtures. Bags are placed on pallets, separately from substances that could affect batch quality. For a wholesale buyer, packaging integrity, preserved labelling, quality certificate, production date and compliance with the guaranteed shelf life are important.
