Alpha Olefin Sulfonate

Description of characteristics

Sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate, other names — AOS, olefin sulfonate, sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate, sodium salt of sulfonated linear hydrocarbon, sodium α-olefin sulfonate, sodium salt of alpha olefin sulfonate, Tainolin AOS-97P, Sulfodet, AOS. Also written as: Sodium Alpha-Olefine Sulfonate, AOS, alpha olefin sulphonate sodium salt.

CAS number: 68439-57-6.
Density — 1.054 g/cm3 at 20 ℃.
Country of production — China, India.
Alpha olefin is a powder of various shades, from white to yellowish, odorless. Resistant to acidic and alkaline environments. When mixed with water, it is not demanding on water hardness or pH.
Alpha olefin sulfonates are produced by sulfonation with sulfur trioxide, followed by alkaline hydrolysis. Sodium sulfonate is highly soluble in water. It is a widely used anionic surfactant. The main advantage of AOS is that it does not irritate the skin, foams well, and is bio-neutral for the environment (it decomposes on its own into substances that are not hazardous to nature). AOS also forms stable emulsions, which is actively used in the cosmetics industry. Combined with its mild effect on human skin, this substance is suitable even for people with sensitive skin.

Application:

  • Household chemicals — laundry detergents and various cleaning products, not only for industrial use but also for the body — soaps, shower gels and bath foams.
  • Textile industry — for washing and treating both raw and finished products, as well as in fabric dyeing.
  • In the petrochemical industry as a highly active surfactant, for example in gas wells to remove excess liquid and solid fractions.
  • In auto chemicals as a component of windshield washer fluids, in transmission and bearing oils, especially for operation in extreme conditions — high cold or heat.
  • In the production of polyethylene and other polymers.
  • In the production of artificial leather.
  • In the manufacture of certain plasticizers, for example for concrete conditioning.
  • In agriculture as part of certain pesticide mixtures.
  • Used in the manufacture of certain foams and emulsions for firefighting.

Precautions:

Store in closed warehouse premises in factory packaging. Avoid contact with moisture. It is advisable to avoid excessive exposure to heat.

If swallowed, rinse the mouth thoroughly with water; do not induce vomiting without medical advice. If it gets into the eyes, rinse with plenty of water.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Alpha Olefin Sulfonate

What is sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate, and how is it designated in documents?

Sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate is an anionic surfactant, which in technical documentation may be designated as AOS, Sodium Alpha-Olefin Sulfonate, or sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate. When purchasing, it is important to check not only the name but also the CAS number, appearance, mass fraction of active substance, moisture content, free alkali content and accompanying salts. This helps avoid confusion between similar trade names and select the product for a specific enterprise formulation.

What quality indicators matter when purchasing sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate?

When purchasing sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate, attention is primarily paid to the mass fraction of active substance, water content, free alkali, sodium sulfate and non-sulfated matter. These parameters affect batch stability, solubility, foaming, colour and the product’s behaviour in the finished mixture.

How does sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate dissolve in water?

Sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate dissolves well in water, but for a stable working solution it is best introduced gradually, with stirring, avoiding the formation of dense lumps. Under production conditions, water temperature, concentration, stirring speed and the order of adding other components are taken into account. If the product is used in a formulation, it is important to control the clarity or homogeneity of the solution, the absence of undissolved particles and compatibility with the other substances according to the process chart.

How to store sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate in a warehouse?

Sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate is stored in sealed factory packaging, in a dry warehouse, protecting the product from moisture and overheating. If it gets wet, the powder can cake, become harder to dose and dissolve unevenly, which creates problems when preparing working mixtures. For a wholesale batch it is important to preserve the labelling, quality certificate and traceability from receipt through to transfer into production. Bags should be placed on pallets, avoiding contact with a wet floor and packaging damage.
