The well-known trivial name for this reagent — “oxalic acid” itself — directly points to plants of the genus Oxalis (sorrel), from which it was first isolated. In agrochemical and industrial use, this is the name that has become standard, although systematic nomenclature offers the alternative “ethanedioic acid”. This duality of names does not confuse chemists: when ordering a wholesale batch in 25 kg bags from a supplier, all market participants understand that the same crystalline powder is meant.
The guaranteed storage period for oxalic acid is established according to the regulatory documentation for the specific product grade. For example, for material produced under TU 2431-001-55980238-02, this period is usually 6 months from the date of manufacture. At the same time, a chemically stable and properly packaged reagent can retain its properties for significantly longer, especially if guided by the general requirements of GOST 22180-76, which allows a three-year period for crystalline oxalic acid under ideal conditions. The key factor for longevity is storage in a dry, unheated warehouse, strictly in sealed packaging that excludes contact with moisture, alkalis and oxidisers. With proper handling, the powder does not cake for a long time, remains free-flowing and continues to be easily dosed, giving a clear solution without sediment.
