Sodium fluoride is a white crystalline substance that looks like salt. It has a high hygroscopicity, therefore, it is necessary to store and transport it only in a special sealed container.
It exists as a relatively rare mineral in nature.
Also Sodium fluoride found in igneous rocks. Its deposits are located in North America, Africa and on the Kola Peninsula.
It is also produced industrially in the process of alkaline hydrolysis of hexafluorosilicates.

Yes, sodium fluoride and fluoride of sodium are the same substance with the formula NaF. The English name “sodium fluoride” may also appear in documents. When purchasing, it is important to check not only the name but also the “pure” qualification, GOST 4463-76, the mass fraction of the main substance, sulfate content, water-insoluble substances, sodium carbonate, silicon oxide, water, acidity and particle size. This reduces the risk of a mistake when selecting fluorine-containing raw material.
For sodium fluoride 98% pure grade, the key indicator is the content of the main substance, but for incoming inspection, sulfates, water-insoluble substances, sodium carbonate, silicon oxide, moisture, acidity calculated as HF and particle size distribution also matter. These parameters affect solubility, batch stability, dosing and the product’s behaviour in the working medium. On receipt, the quality certificate, labelling, bag integrity, absence of wetting, caking and foreign inclusions are checked.
The 100–200 mesh particle size affects the free-flowing quality, uniformity of dosing and dissolution rate of sodium fluoride. If the fraction noticeably differs from what is stated, the product may behave differently during decanting, solution preparation or feeding through equipment. For an enterprise, this is an important batch stability parameter, especially for regular deliveries and work according to an approved process chart. So the particle size distribution should be checked together with the main substance and impurities, not treated as a secondary indicator.
Sodium fluoride 98% pure grade is stored in a dry, unheated warehouse, in sealed factory packaging and separately from acids, moisture and substances that could contaminate the batch. If it gets wet, the powder can cake, become harder to dose and require additional checking before use. Bags are placed on pallets, preserving labelling and the quality certificate. Since the product is classified as hazardous, access to the storage area must be restricted, and personnel trained in the safe handling of fluorine-containing reagents.
