Caustic soda (NaOH) is the most common and strongest alkali. It has the appearance of scaly granules of white color without a pronounced odor. Corrosive sodium has excellent hygroscopic properties, easily dissolves in water.

Distinctive features:

  • When dissolved in water, heat is released;
  • High hygroscopicity;
  • It releases hydrogen when interacting with certain metals.

Sodium hydroxide is used in many branches of the national economy.

Caustic is used:

  •     in the production of mineral fertilizers;
  •     in oil refining and petrochemical industry during oil refining and liquefaction, gas, in the production of diesel fuel, lubricating oils, paraffin, ethylene, ethylbenzene;
  •     in the pulp and paper industry for pulping and bleaching of pulp of all kinds, in the production of paper, cardboard;
  •     in the food industry (additive Е 524) in the production of vegetable oils, fatty acids;
  •     in the production of soap, perfume and cosmetics products;
  •     in the light industry in the production of knitwear, linen, silk, cotton fabrics;
  •     in mechanical engineering, machine tool and instrument making, electrical and radio engineering industry for etching and degreasing, and metalworking;
  •     for use in water treatment as a reagent during coagulation, stabilized preparation, deferrization, softening, desalting of water, descaling and deposits in pipes.

Caustic is widely used in industry and at home and refers to substances of the 2nd class of danger. Therefore, when working with caustic soda, it is necessary to comply with safety techniques and work in a protective suit, or a rubber apron with a filter respirator or a gas mask.

How does caustic soda act in industrial processes?

Is caustic soda an alkali or an acid?

Whether caustic soda is an alkali or an acid is an important question for safe handling of the reagent. Caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide, is a strong alkali, not an acid. It reacts actively with acids, can cause chemical burns, and releases heat when dissolved in water. What is the difference between caustic soda and soda ash?

Caustic soda is sodium hydroxide, while soda ash is sodium carbonate. Briefly, the difference between caustic soda and soda ash is that caustic is a noticeably more corrosive and aggressive reagent, requiring strict safety measures during storage, dosing and solution preparation. Soda ash acts more mildly, but is also an alkaline technical product. Therefore one reagent cannot be substituted for the other without checking the process regulations: the pH, reaction rate, effect on materials and safety requirements all change.

How to store caustic soda so it does not lose its properties?

Caustic soda is stored in sealed packaging, because it actively absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. If storage conditions are not observed, the product can cake, partially change composition on the surface, and become harder to dose. The warehouse must be dry, ventilated, with restricted access and separate placement from acids and incompatible substances.
